We Struggle to Get Water - Residents of Tamale Speaks

As the world marks the Water Day celebration, many homes in the Northern Region still depend on Dam water for their daily life activities.

Some residents who spoke to SoireeNews with regards to the  International Water Day Celebration bemoaned the challenges they go through before having access to portal water.

According to them, their taps have stopped flowing for several months.

To them, authorities at the Ghana Water Company (GWC) in the region have not been able to explain the reason behind the lockage.

In an interview with the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Water Company, Mr. Nii Abbey said the problem is a result of an illegal connection.

He added that most communities are not getting water because most of their underground pipes have been destroyed by some contractors working on roads and drainage.

He explained that, many residents have illegally hocked to the company's supply lines, this according to him makes it difficult for the free flow of water in people's homes.

According to him, the company has arrested and prosecuted many water thieves to deter others from the culture of impunity, but some recalcitrants still indulge in the act which according to him prevents many residents from having access to potable water.

He, therefore, appealed to the public to avoid connecting taps into their homes illegally and was quick to appeal to the Contractor to be careful when carrying out construction work to prevent the destruction of underground pipes.

"World Water Day" has been celebrated each year on March 22 since 1992. This Day focuses on the importance of Freshwater and presses for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The theme of "World Water Day 2021" is "Valuing Water".  According to the United Nations, "The value of water is about much more than its price." This day is celebrated keeping in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 6 which is aimed at achieving water and sanitation by all for 2030.
