US says declaration of Ruto win a key 'milestone'

The US embassy in Kenya praised Kenyans for holding a peaceful election and asked all parties to cooperate to settle any outstanding issues amicably.

It stated that William Ruto's election as president-elect of Kenya was an "important turning point in the electoral process."

The statement said, "Going forward, we urge all parties to cooperate to peacefully resolve any outstanding issues regarding this election using the already-in-place dispute resolution systems."

The embassy requested that political figures keep urging their supporters to participate in the election process peacefully and without using violence.

With 50.49% of the vote, Mr. Ruto was declared the victor, narrowly defeating his primary rival, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Four out of the seven national electoral commissioners stated that they were unable to "take ownership of the result," and Mr. Odinga's poll workers stated that they were unable to verify the outcome.

According to Mr. Ruto, the election process was "the most transparent ever" in Kenya. He has promised to work for all Kenyans.

While there were reports of protests in Mr. Odinga's major support areas, there were celebrations in Mr. Ruto's strongholds.
