Former Nigerian VP removes posts condemning murder

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has come under fire for removing social media posts criticizing the blasphemy-related murder of a lady in northern Nigeria.

Deborah Samuel, a student at Sokoto's Shehu Shagari College of Education, was slain by an enraged crowd on Thursday for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.

Mr. Abubakar, a leading opposition candidate for next year's federal elections from northern Adamawa state, is thought to embrace moderate Islamic ideas by followers in southern Nigeria.

"There can't be a reason for such brutal murder," he added in now-deleted statements on his Facebook page and Twitter account. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those responsible must face the consequences."

People who stated they would no longer vote for him in February because of his stance on the woman's death left comments on the posters, while others complimented him for speaking out.

He's now been chastised for removing the original messages, including this tweet from a well-known Nigerian comedian "politicians are unconcerned about the people. When they want our votes, they only play to the crowd ":

Mr. Abubakar has subsequently corrected his initial statement on another Facebook page for Hausa users "does not follow my commands This is where I announce that any post without an AA is not mine "he said.
