US drops Burkina Faso from Africa free trade deal

Following the United States' decision to remove Burkina Faso from its preferential trade program, the country has reaffirmed its promise to restoring constitutional rule over the next 18 months.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) requirements weren't met, according to the office of the American Trade Representative, because the nation violated the constitution.

Due to the government's incapacity to keep an escalating Islamist insurgency under control, there were two military coups in Burkina Faso last year.

Agoa grants duty-free access to the US to nations in sub-Saharan Africa as long as they comply with specified criteria, including advancements in democracy.
