Dispute about the running mate chosen by the Nigerian ruling party

Following the announcement of Senator Kashim Shetima as Bola Tinubu's running partner for president, Christian organizations in Nigeria have vowed to vote against the party in power, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Because Mr. Shetima and Mr. Tinubu are Muslims, their presidential ticket is perceived as lacking religious diversity.

According to the Christian Association of Nigeria, releasing a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a highly divisive nation like Nigeria was a political error.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) reportedly stated that it would counsel its adherents against voting for the APC on the privately-owned Vanguard website.

However, Mr. Tinubu defended his decision, saying that he preferred expertise and integrity before religion.

The leading presidential contenders have been cautioned by Christian and civil society organizations against running Muslim-Muslim tickets in the February 2023 election.

Atiku Abubakar, the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) presidential candidate and a Muslim, has chosen Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, a Christian, as his running mate.
