Chelsea failed to score against Sevilla in their Champions League opener at Stamford Bridge.

It was a good early intent from Chelsea, who line up as expected with Pulišić on the right of the three behind Werner and Mount on the left. Sevilla’s Diego Carlos also showed no nerves on his Champions League debut, as he made a couple of important interceptions in the start of the game.

The Spanish team began settling impressively into the match and achieved a measure of control to possess much of the ball.

Sevilla's almost took the lead in the 18-minute as their high press bore fruit to win a free-kick that brought their first opportunity for Gudelj to test Mendy. The Senegalese did not disappoint and made an impressive save to deny Sevilla the opener.

The game became a ding dong battle with both teams taking each other on whenever they were on the ball. Campos in the 33-minute made a couple of important defensive interventions and stepped forward into the opposition half, leaving a couple of blue shirts in his wake.

He played a fine pass to Rakitić, in space in a central position. Unfortunately, Sevilla could not capitalise on a promising situation with Suso's cross straight at Mendy.

Ziyech was introduced for Mount after impressing in the first half. Chilwell kept his display active and did not fear going forward but also solid at the back, not afraid to get stuck in and calm under pressure. Werner's outstanding runs could result in nothing following Sevilla’s reading of the runner whenever he was spotted with a pass or when on the ball.

Sevilla kept asking questions as they played with increased assurance during the latter part of the game yet Chelsea were more determined to end the game in a draw than to concede.

The game ended goalless and a clean sheet to the English side who conceded three in their last game against Southampton with Kepa in post.
