Chelsea head to Stamford Bridge with a point after a 1-1 draw away at Real Madrid.

Two first half goals from Christian Pulisic and Karim Benzema left the game opened and will be decided on the return leg in England.

Chelsea started strongly against Los Blancos in the early minutes and created few chances to threaten the visitors but the aggressive Madrid defense avoided an early slip up.

The visitors opened the scores through Pulisic in the 14th minute after the Los Blancos defense were sliced open.

Rüdiger weighted a beautiful, lofted straight pass from the left of centre on the halfway line for Pulišić beyond the Madrid back line on the edge of the penalty area. As the defenders rushed back to thwart him, the USA prodigy caught to his right, trickle Courtois before slotting beyond two defenders on the line.

The hosts warmed in the game and kept pushing forward for the equalizer until Karim Benzema came close in the 23 rd minute. The French man with the ball turned away from Jorginho in a central position outside the penalty area. He took a touch to his left and quickly fired in a thunderous effort that beat Mendy but not the far angle of the woodwork.

Chelsea kept breaking the Madrid line with ease as Zidane's 3-5-2 formation kept failing giving Chelsea more edge to move forward.

Benzema found the equalizer in the 29-minute from a corner.

Casemiro met a deep cross from the left at the far post, nodding his header back into a crowded goalmouth. Éder Militão rose highest to add a touch and provided Benzema with an opportunity in little space which he took terrifically and smashed a powerful volley beyond Mendy and into the roof of the goalkeeper's net.

Chelsea boxed Real Madrid at their side in the second half and forced them into making errors which the Blues forwards failed to capitalize.

Thomas Tuchel made three changes in the 66-minute; Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havetz and Reece James were brought on for Pulisic, Werner and Azpilicueta to sparkle the game.

Zidane brought on Hazard for Vinicius Jnr.

The visitors rose on top of the game and dictated the pace of the game but found it tough to break through the hosts defense.

The game ended 1-1 at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.
