Police stated that they were looking into the circumstances surrounding Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi's apparent suicide at the age of 59. On Monday, he was discovered dead in his automobile.

He had previously been to a court proceeding where Bester's girlfriend, the well-known doctor Nandipha Magudumana, had lost her bid to have her arrest in Tanzania declared illegal.

Around South Africa, shock has been felt as a result of the death of Brigadier Mkhaulesi.

The 31-year veteran police detective has been praised for his dedication and loyalty.

Bester is referred to as the "Facebook rapist" because he lured his victims via social networking sites.

Last year, he faked his death in order to escape from prison. He was detained in Tanzania in April along with his girlfriend, who is suspected of aiding in his emigration, and returned to South Africa to stand trial.
