Maj Gen Juvénal Marizamunda was chosen by the president to succeed Maj Gen Albert Murasira, who held the position since 2018.

Lt Gen Mubarakh Muganga, a new army commander, will succeed Gen Jean Bosco Kazura, who has led the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) since November 2019.

A simultaneous firing of the army chief and the minister of defense is unusual in Rwanda.

The reorganization has not been given a rationale. Mr. Kagame would occasionally make public allusions to the cause of prior adjustments to the military's highest ranks.

Mr. Kagame also named a new army chief of staff (land forces) and head of military intelligence during the Monday night reorganization.

He also replaced the top commanders of the Rwandan army fighting terrorist Islamists in Mozambique.
