There’s no cartel in MUSIGA —Bessa Simons

Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Ras Appiah Caleb-Levi, two previous candidates for president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), have said that the organization is run like a "cartel," with presidents grooming their loyalists to take over as their successors when they leave office.

They contend that Diana Hopeson's term, which she passed on to Bice Osei Kuffour, aka Obour, marked the beginning of the unique succession plan, and that Bessa Simons, who they allege is a member of the same "camp," is the current nominee.

While Ambolley has been making claims for years, Ras Appiah Caleb-Levi, who lost to Bessa Simons in the most recent elections, repeated similar comments, claiming that MUSIGA executives won't let "outsiders" run the show.

But, the new president of MUSIGA, Bessa Simons, stated there was not a shred of truth in it during an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, October 24, following the swearing-in of the newly elected executives at the Accra Tourism Information Centre, Accra.

"MUSIGA has never been and is not a cartel. We all ran for office and won votes in accordance with our manifestos. I think the previous presidents ran campaigns similar to mine in order to win votes and were elected to office based on their qualifications.

"Anyone who sits there and claims that MUSIGA is a cartel is false. Free and fair elections have always been held in our country. There's no reason for anyone to criticize the union if they don't win an election, he told Graphic Showbiz.
