Unlike many other schools in Ghana having conducive classrooms to study, the story at Cherembo D/A Junior High School (JHS)  in the Bono East Region is totally different.

A three-unit classroom block that was started in 2015 has been abandoned by the contractor after the 2016 general elections to date.

The said building was raised up to the stage to be roofed.

During SN24 reporter, Sammed Gurundari’s visit to the school on Thursday, February 4, 2021, to interact with the staff and students found out that learners have no choice than to study in a muddy sandy floor structure that was put up by the PTA of the school which has no doors, windows and with a few chairs.

He found out that three teachers are handling eight subjects from JHS one to JHS three.

The headmaster of the school Mr. Taala Evans told SN24 that the unavailability of doors and windows of the classrooms allows animals to defecate in the classrooms.

He stressed that during the rainy season it was difficult to keep students in the classroom because the water ran via the classrooms.

“The school has only three (3) teachers including myself as headmaster. We teach eight (8) subjects. I sometimes don’t have enough time to teach because I attend meetings during class hours outside the community. Some of the subjects are left out because our numbers are inadequate to handle all them” he stated.

“Although the students are willing to be in the school, the lack of learning materials made them uncomfortable. For instance, form one class which contains about 26 students has only 6 dual-desks whiles form 2 class of about 15 has only 3 dual-desks. Most of them stand during lessons. The form 3 class is also shared with primary pupils making them uncomfortable to learn.”

Teachers and students who shared their sentiments about the poor school however pleaded with the Government of Ghana for assistance.
