The Northern Regional Police Commander, COP Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga has rendered an unqualified apology to residents of Tamale who were molested by some police personnel.

In his visit to some residents who were assaulted by some police personnel, COP Timothy Yoosa condemned the act, stating that they were not directed to take such action.

According to him, the duty of the police service is to protect and maintain the law, but not to harass its citizens.

Answering questions of missing items at some homes where the police discharged the operation, he assured that the situation will be investigated to unearth the actual fact of the matter.

He further confirmed the interdiction of the police personnel who according to police statements acted unprofessional, adding that their ban will help the police to conduct proper investigations into the matter.

COP Yoosa Bonga indicated that his visitation to the affected homes is geared to build the relationship between the police and residents of Tamale.

The four interdicted police personnel together with the Staff of VRA/NEDCO stormed homes of some residents in Nakpanzoo, Lamashegu, Nimafong, Zujung, suburbs of Tamale and subjected them to beatings over suspected power theft.

In a viral video, the police personnel were seen lashing some of the victims and some being manhandle on the ground under a scorching sun.

One of the victims at Lamashegu, Salifu Seidu in an interview said the apology rendered by the regional commander is well accepted since he can't use wrong to correct wrong.

He however revealed that a sum of Ghc 2,000 was missing from his room, including his son's motorbike and laptop.

Ali Alhassan, also a victim condemned the police action, advising that the police entry into their homes was uncalled for.

To him, the police ought to have engaged elders of the homes to find a solution to the matter. He said the four police personnel do not respect the law of the country hence their unprofessional conduct.
