Sudan declares UN envoy unwelcome in the country

Volker Perthes, the UN representative in Sudan, has been designated "persona non grata" by the Sudanese government, which essentially means that it no longer recognizes his status there.

Sudan declares UN envoy unwelcome in the country

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Thursday saying, "The Government of the Republic of Sudan has notified the Secretary General of the United Nations that it has declared Mr. Volker Perthes... persona non grata as of today."

According to the UN mission's Twitter account, Mr. Perthes was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Thursday for a number of diplomatic discussions.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto leader of Sudan and head of its armed forces, recently accused Mr. Perthes of inciting the civil war in his nation.

He sought his removal.

Before the confrontation between the army and its paramilitary adversary, the Rapid Support Forces, began in April, protests against supposed foreign intervention were directed at the UN post in Sudan.
