Suame Market has been shut down according to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Dr. John Osei Bobie Boahen.

The decision made by the MCE on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 came as a result of traders disregard to the various preventive measures especially the social distancing order.

The market women since the lifting of the three-week partial lockdown by the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, April 19 2020 have flouted on the social distancing directives on giving no modicum of respect to the rules and the danger the coronavirus can affect their lives.

Speaking to Kwame Tanko on the Angel in the Morning Show on Kumasi based Angel FM, Hon Bobie disclosed that an announcement was made to the traders on Monday morning to quit activities on Tuesday to enable the Assembly strategise on grouping the traders to avoid congestion; a fate suffered by the Kumasi Central market and Dr. Mensah before everything was put in order.

“We asked them not to be present today to enable us meet the leadership and plan on how to fraction them to avoid the congestion. It’s worse today and they have threatened to attack the taskforce officers for preventing them from selling,” he said.

Rendering from the accounts of the MCE, the recorded number of COVID-19 cases IN THE Suame Municipality as at yesterday, Tuesday April, 22 2020 has sprang from two to five which if measures are not taken to control the congestion of the careless market women, the coronavirus will escalate in the Municipal and wipe out lives.

“As at yesterday, the report presented to me was that our numbers has risen from two to five and that is a very bad omen. I just cannot watch these women infect themselves in the name of trade. Whatever decision I see fit is what I am employing.

“I am pronouncing a closure of the market today. If they do not sell, Suame people will still cope with feeding. The market has been closed from now on,” he angrily added.

The ASHANTI Region as at yesterday, April 21 2020 had recorded 68 COVID 19 cases with three deaths.
