The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has assured people in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions that water that flows through taps in their home is safe for drinking.

NADMO released a press statement on Monday, January 13 explaining that the water has been diluted by acid after an articulator truck plunged into the river, which as a result led to the washing of 2500 gallons of acid into the water and culminated in the death of several aquatic animals including fishes and crocodiles among others.

“All communities along the Tano river from Techiman – Tanoso to Chira, Duayaw Nkwanta, Bechem are advised strongly not to drink water from the Tano river effective today till further notice,” the statement said.

According to an official release by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) on Thursday, January 16 residents in the affected areas can consume water that flows in the tap that due to the stringent production processes the company employs in water treatment.

The company made known that the contamination of the Tano River had no effect on the water that runs through their taps.

“All GWCL treatment plants are equipped with standard and in some locations, state-of-the-art laboratories, and as part of the treatment process, the pH of the raw water is tested at source, during the treatment process and ultimately the final clear water which is finally pumped for consumption. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for pH testing is hourly on daily basis but has currently been reduced to 30 minutes due to the current situation and also under 24-hour surveillance,” the statement said.

“Management wishes to assure the general public, that GWCL Experts are working together with the Water Resources Commission, NADMO and the District Assembly to bring the situation to normalcy and that, there is no need for any anxiety in consuming water that flows through the tap,” the statement added.
