Russia-Burundi nuclear energy deal in final stage - Lavrov

Following talks with Albert Shingiro, the foreign minister of Burundi, in Bujumbura on Tuesday, Mr. Lavrov made the comments, according to Russian state news agency Tass.

In a nuclear energy roadmap agreement that the two nations signed in November of last year, Russia pledged to help Burundi set up nuclear plants.

The Russian state energy agency Rosatom and its Burundian partners have already signed the nuclear energy strategy, according to Mr. Lavrov.

He declared that cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy was a commitment shared by both sides.

Mr. Lavrov met with Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye for more bilateral discussions prior to his departure for Mozambique.

Following a recent trip to Kenya and before his arrival in South Africa, Mr. Lavrov is currently on an African tour.

Mr. Shingiro reaffirmed that Burundi would not join Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.
