Zimbabwe summons US diplomat over social media posts

The US embassy in Zimbabwe urged citizens to register to vote last week "and make sure your voice is heard."

The meeting was confirmed by Rofina Chikava, acting permanent secretary for Zimbabwe's ministry of foreign affairs, in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Ms. Chikava, she had informed Elaine French, the US embassy's charge d'affaires, that the posts were inappropriate and went against diplomatic protocol.

The two met, according to a spokesman for the US embassy, who also insisted that there was no issue with the social media posts.

Meg Riggs, the spokeswoman, is cited as saying, "We stand by our recent social media posts calling for peace during the election season."

In advance of the scheduled general elections, tensions are increasing.

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), an opposition group, has demanded an examination of the voter list due to missing names, including those of some of its officials and voters who have been relocated several kilometers from their original voting districts.

Some of these irregularities will be resolved, according to the electoral commission, during the ongoing scrutiny of the voters' rolls.
