A research analyst at the Institute of Energy Security (IES), Fritz Moses, has called on the government to pay greater attention to developing renewable energy in the country to achieve its aim of extending electricity to the remaining 14% of rural areas in the country.

President Akufo Addo presenting his inaugural speech in Parliament at his swearing-in ceremony pledged to complete the remaining 14% of the rural electrification project by the end of his second term in office.

Speaking to Soiree News Bono Regional correspondent, Nana Ama Asiedu in an interview today, Mr Fritz Moses stated that the President’s vision could be achieved only by focusing much on developing the nation’s current status of renewable energy.

He stated that the nation’s energy grid is about 4,000MW while national demand stands at 2,800MW; an indication that the country has an excess grid of 1,200MW which makes it possible for such vision to be achieved.

But he was quick to add that extending the national grid to some communities in the country becomes very difficult considering its geographical location, and believes this and many others would be some of the challenges that will confront the government in embarking on such endeavour.

He noted that there are some energy laws that do not permit the banks in the country to invest in the energy sector and called for the abolition of those laws to support the President’s vision.
