The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party in Bono Region, Asare Bediako Seth, has called for a total overhaul of the party to be able to win the 2024 general election.

In an interview with Soiree News Bono Regional  Correspondent Nana Ama Asiedu, the Communication director said the 2020 general election had really taught the party a big lesson and NPP ‘’only needs to learn from its mistakes to make progress in the next elections’’.

President Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party was re-elected in the 2020 general election when he defeated his predecessor, John Mahama of the NDC, but his party’s mandate was reduced from a 62.7% majority in Parliament as it shares an equal number of seats with main rival NDC, with an NPP-leaning independent candidate holding the last seat.

Some political experts have raised concern that a hung Parliament would complicate Akufo-Addo’s efforts to act decisively to restore an economy hurt badly by the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. The global health crisis has driven Ghana’s ratio of debt to gross domestic product to 71% in September, the highest in four years.

Before the crisis, Ghana, being Africa’s biggest gold producer was already under financial pressure due to the costs of cleaning up the banking sector and energy-sector liabilities.

“The NDC will have power that no opposition party has had under the fourth republic, an opposition that can veto what they want,” Kobi Annan, an analyst of the U.K. and Ghana-based Songhai Advisory has said.

Akufo-Addo, who won with 51.6% of valid presidential votes, compared with Mahama’s 47.4%, said in his December 11 victory speech that Ghanaians had shown with their votes that the two parties, which have dominated politics in the country since 1992, would have to work together.

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong had earlier raised concerns of the party restructuring itself or risk losing the 2024 general election. 

Adding up to this call by the legislature, the NPP Bono Regional Communications Director described the advice as a step in the right direction.

"Kennedy (Assin Central MP) deserves to caution the NPP if it fails to restructure based on what happened during the polls," he said.

  "I have said this time and time again that NPP needs a total overhaul else we ll lose the elections someday.

"What we are going through is an eye-opener and its an opportunity for us to sit up and put in proper management. 

"NDC is not coming to power again if concerns are addressed and resolved."
