Protesters in Port Sudan want UN envoy to leave - TV

Volker Perthes' home in eastern Port Sudan was surrounded by protesters on Thursday, according to a pro-army TV channel, who were calling for his departure from the Red Sea state. Perthes is the director of the UN mission in Sudan.

Days after combat broke out between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army on April 15, Mr. Perthes and other UN personnel relocated from the country's capital, Khartoum, to Port Sudan.

The Tayba TV channel said that "the people of the Red Sea state surrounded Volker's home and demanded his immediate expulsion from the state."

The TV station posted pictures and a video of protesters holding signs and waving Sudanese flags in a series of tweets.

Mixed responses were given to the tweets, with some users demanding Mr. Perthe's dismissal and others criticizing the protests.

However, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared that "the UN [was] not leaving" while permitting the staff to relocate to Port Sudan.
