Sam Allardyce says there is a need for the Premier League to go on a COVID-break after the recent threats on players and staff.

Everton’s fixture with Manchester City was postponed on Monday, five hours to kick-off as Fulham’s game with Tottenham is in doubt to be honoured on Wednesday night following positive results recorded.

Doubts mounted ahead of Sheffield United’s trip to the Turf Moor hours after the Premier League released a statement that out of 1,479 players and staff tested between December 21 to December 27, 18 have tested positive for coronavirus.

The new coach of West Bromwich Albion observes that a break could act as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus which prevent an outright break if the rate of infections rises.

“When I listen to the news the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus, we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break,” he said after his side's 5-0 defeat to Leeds.

“I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do it catch Covid. I'm very concerned for myself and football in general. If that's what needs to be done we need to do it.”

Sam Allardyce suffered his second defeat since taking over the West Midlands club against Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United. His side were beaten 5-0 at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night a day after their impressive performance at Anfield which saw them draw with the Champions.

His first defeat was a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa at home.
