Police arrest 26 Residents  following Ada Songor Lagoon  Salt Mining Protest

This latest incident comes on the back of a protest embarked upon by some indigenes of the Terkpebiawe Clan of Ada in August 2021 where the indigenes who claim to be the custodial owners of the Songor lagoon embarked on a demonstration exercise to protest against the mining lease granted to Electrochem Ghana Limited to mine salt in the area.

The Police in Ada Sege District Police Command in the Greater Accra Region has arrested a total of twenty-six (26) residents of Toflokpo, Shalom and Bonikope, the farming communities in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region.

The residents were arrested on Monday, August 9, 2021, around 11: 20 am and were transferred to the Tema District Police cell, making the Toflokpo, Shalom and Bonikop ghosts communities as many who feared being attacked by the police officers had run away from the three communities.

The 26 residents were arrested that saw some 18 people wounded following a protest over the ownership of the Songhor salt lagoon. 

Some victims claim the wounds were caused by gunfire from police.

The police have declined to respond to the incident.

The cause of the protest is that some residents are unhappy about current arrangements to revive the salt lagoon.

In the course of protests, they clashed with the police.

The 18 wounded have since been admitted at the Ada Sege Poly Clinic for further treatment while 26 other residents connected to the disturbances who were arrested have been in police custody in Tema pending investigation.
