Poets should be used by musicians for their lyrics, says Kwabena Kwabena

Kwabena Kwabena, a highlife musician and songwriter from Ghana, thinks poets have a place in the music business.

Poets should be used by musicians for their lyrics, says Kwabena Kwabena

This may support the view that poetry and music are siblings, which is widely held. On Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM, Kwabena stated that poets are skilled in the use of language, which is the heart of lyricism.

He explained to the host Kwame Dadzie that top liners or composers might then set these lyrics to music.

The industry, in Kwabena's opinion, could work with and accommodate these poets.

"Musicians should begin to value individuals with a variety of talents. People who write good stories, compose good music, and are good producers are all out there. I must admit that we need to start hiring poets; those who can create beautiful English compositions; after that, we can hire composers to create the melody.

The caliber of songwriting in Ghana will decline, he continued, if songwriting is not recognized as a craft, for which reason everybody involved in the music-making process must work together.

A poet and playwright named Chief a Moomen observed that he had begun creating musical scores for his productions, demonstrating that poets are capable of creating song lyrics.

He claimed that because he lacks musical talent, he normally records the melody as soon as he hears it on his phone, sends it to a producer for finalization, and then adds the lyrics or poetry.

Kwabena Kwabena further noted that songs by Africans written in English typically lack depth based on his observations.

He claimed that when African musicians sing in their native languages, their songs are more effectively communicated.
