Persons with sickle have been advised to strictly comply with the novel coronavirus safety protocols to avoid going through a severe crisis.

Speaking on Health Matters on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, monitored by Soiree News, the Physician Assistant and Head of Sickle Cell Association, Mrs Angelina Amoatemaa Korang indicated that one of the factors that trigger the condition is infection hence the call.

Sickle cell disorder is a genetic condition, which affects your red blood cells, meaning it is passed on from parents and an individual is born with it.

Sickle cell disorder causes the normally round and flexible blood cells to become stiff and sickle-shaped, stopping the blood cells, and the oxygen they carry, from being able to move freely around the body and causing pain.

Speaking on the management of sickle cell disorder, Mrs Korang said that infection was one of the triggers of the disease, citing covid-19 as an example. She explained that those with the disease have low immunity hence when infected; their system may not be able to fight it as compared to persons without the condition who are supposed with strong immunity.

She implored them to frequently wash their hands properly with soap under running water, wear masks all the time and avoid large gatherings.

The head of the sickle cell also cautioned patients to stay away from food enriched with iron since their bodies have it in excess.
