People in Kyiv hail historic day

In Kyiv, I have been asking people how they are feeling about the visit of the US president.

Roksoliana Gera, a lawyer, told us she was "very astonished" to see Joe Biden as she crossed the street.

"I'm really appreciative of his help. It is quite important to us, she says. I admire his bravery for taking on this assignment and showing the American people his support by coming.

Roksoliana expressed her gratitude for his arrival on this day, the Day of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes.

The day honors the more than 100 individuals who died when President Viktor Yanukovych's pro-Russian regime was deposed in what is known as the Revolution of Dignity nine years ago.

It's encouraging for us on this day, she says, "when we are trying to commemorate all the defenders of Ukrainian liberty in 2014."

With regard to Biden's visit, she comments, "It's such a momentous day."
