Moments after casting his ballot in his hometown in the Rift Valley region, Deputy President William Ruto declared confidence in winning the presidential election.

He told reporters, "I look forward to a victorious day."

"I'm extremely optimistic that Kenyans will make decisions that will lead our nation into the future. It is on to us all to accept the people's decisions."

After serving as vice president for 10 years, Mr. Ruto, 55, is running for the presidency for the first time.

His major rival, longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga, is seeking the presidency for the fifth time.
