Only 12 Million Ghanaian Workers Are On SSNIT

The Minister for Labour and Employment who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West Constituency, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, has appeared before the Public Accounts Committee and revealed that, about the two million Ghanaian working population in the country, only 12 million are on the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

The Minister for Labour and Employment who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West Constituency, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, has appeared before the Public Accounts Committee and revealed that, about the two million Ghanaian working population in the country, only 12 million are on the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
The  Public Account Committee has commenced considering the public hearing of the 2018 Auditor General's report on public boards, corporations, and statutory institutions.
At the committee hearing, the minister indicated that there are lots of people working but not on SSNIT.
He stated that the law requires everybody who employs people to work in their firm is enroll on the SSNIT scheme and are paid accordingly.
 He told the committee that most informal workers are not on the SSNIT scheme.
He stated that he has put proper measures in place to educate the public who are working under the informal sector to be enrolled in the SSNIT pension scheme.
He indicated that the government is committed to enrolling all informal workers in one scheme.
He made this known when members of the Parliament asked several workers who are on SSNIT.
