NRSA to reintroduce mandatory road tow levy

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) says it will re-introduce the road tow levy in spite of previous public criticism.

According to the authority, the move is part of measures to improve safety on the country’s roads.

Plans to implement a law that imposes a mandatory levy on all owners and persons in charge of motor vehicles, for the purpose of towing broken down vehicles on the roads were abandoned following a public uproar.

But the recent spate of road carnage has re-ignited calls for the police service and road safety authority to step up enforcement of road regulations.

On Wednesday, 14 persons died in separate accidents re-igniting calls for the police service and road safety authority to step up enforcement of road regulations.

One of the accidents which occurred at Tesano in the Greater Accra Region left two persons dead as the driver of a commercial bus run into a vehicle abandoned along the road.

The accident, a section of Ghanaians believes could have been avoided if the stationary truck was towed away.

In view of this, Director of Planning and Programs at the NRSA David Adonteng  said plans are underway to bring back the Mandatory Tow Levy.

“The problem is still there and it is killing people. We as National Road Safety Authority do not think this project has been abandoned. We will come up with it again.

“At the moment we are discussing it amongst ourselves technically. We are also discussing with our ministry, police and other stakeholders. We are discussing even at Parliament level to bring back the project,” he said as quoted by myjoyonline.
