Nigeria elections: Atiku says 'coasting to victory’

Atiku Abubakar, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, claimed that early results indicated he was likely to win Nigeria's presidential poll.

In at least two-thirds of the states, Mr. Abubakar claimed on Twitter, his party was "securing the highest number of valid ballots cast as well as the statutory 25%."

This is true even though only one of Nigeria's 36 states had formal results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec).

Bola Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress party, received 201,494 ballots from the state of Ekiti in the southwest.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party earned 11,397 votes, compared to Mr. Abubakar's 89,554 votes.

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of Inec, stated that the commission would make some of the findings from the other states public on Monday at 10:00 GMT.

On Sunday, Inec announced that it was attempting to resolve issues with its portal for watching election results.

In order to stop alleged attempts to tamper with the vote, Mr. Abubakar implored Inec to direct its officers to submit all results to the portal.

After a general election marred by isolated acts of violence, pervasive delays, and logistical difficulties, final presidential results are anticipated to be announced by 1 March.

The election was characterized as being largely peaceful and having a high voter turnout by the Ecowas election observer team.
