A suspected infamous kidnapper who flaunted his wealth on social media has been detained by Nigerian police.

According to local media, many were familiar with John Lyon as a banker who frequently encouraged readers to work hard and exercise caution.

The BBC was informed by a police officerin the southern Bayelsa state that Mr. Lyon was in their care.

After being detained in the nation's capital, Abuja, the suspect was moved to the state, according to Asimi Butswat.

According to Mr. Butswat, "When they get the money, they go to Abuja and live opulently."

The officials claim that his gang was responsible for at least ten kidnappings in Bayelsa state that were held for ransom. Nevertheless, he is not the group's leader.

Many Nigerians have expressed shock at the situation, and others have even characterized the suspect as kind and generous who enjoyed giving gifts.

Mr. Lyon has not yet made any public remarks.

However, a video purportedly depicting him in police detention has made its way online. The jailed man is seen pleading for mercy in the brief clip after being arrested.
