Chinese funding for flood relief in South Africa has been dubbed a "joke."

The Chinese embassy in South Africa has donated a million rand ($66,000; £50,000) to flood relief efforts, although several South Africans have expressed dissatisfaction with the small amount.

The donation, according to Chinese envoy Chen Xiaodong, is part of China's efforts to assist South Africans devastated by the calamity in KwaZulu-Natal province.

However, one social media user said that the sum "was a joke when billions of rands [are] required to repair everything."

Another person likened the Chinese gift to a larger sum offered by a rich South African businessman.

"A million rand from China?" says the narrator. Even if [Patrick] Motsepe donated $30 million as an individual, a wealthy country like South Africa, which is the world's second-richest country, donates a million."

The African Union pledged a $150,000 gift to the relief operations on Tuesday from its emergency fund.

More than 450 people have died as a result of the terrible floods, which have devastated infrastructure in numerous regions of the province and prompted the government to declare a national disaster.
