Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to Nigerian president, Major General Muhammadu (rtd) to open the country’s borders according to Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina

The statement revealed on Monday made known the Nigerian market is significant for certain categories of business people in Ghana therefore there was the need for the Nigerian government to end the closure of borders.

The Nigeria government revealed in a circular dated on November 1 that its border will remain closed until January 31, 2020. The extension of the joint border operations code-named Exercise Swift Response led to the total shutdown of land frontiers across the country with the date disclosure not favoring entrepreneurs in the West African region who were optimistic that the Nigerian government would end the military exercise before Christmas.

The duo have held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020 in London and according to Buahri, the closure of the border was revealed as not to cease trade particularly food products. He spoke that it was to put an end to arms and ammunition, as well as hard drugs, which were also being smuggled into Nigeria.

“When most of the vehicles carrying rice and other food products through our land borders are intercepted, you find cheap hard drugs, and small arms, under the food products. This has terrible consequences for any country.”

Buhari, however, had said it was regrettable that the partial border closure was having “negative economic impact on our neighbours,” but added that “we cannot leave our country, particularly the youths, endangered”.

He had also added that the opening of the borders would not happen till the final report of a committee set up on the matter was submitted and considered.

“Once the committee comes up with its recommendations, we will sit and consider them.”
