Some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Bono region have bemoaned the increasing trend of modern-day slavery in the Bono region and have called for national intervention. 


At the media engagement, the programs manager for Actionaid, Kwame Afram said, the cases of cashew farmers in the Jaman North and South municipalities as well as the Tain District engaging children and women as farm laborers in their cashew business and other hazardous work is alarming and calls on all stakeholders to address the situation. 

The Bono Regional Director of Social Welfare, Peter Yaw Duah also added that the Social Welfare is responsible for providing shelter for children on the streets but his outfit has no shelter for such children and calls for state support to work to reduce the increase of slavery in the area.

Mr. George Yaw Ankomah, the Bono Regional Director for the Department of  Children stressed that the report from the Ghana Statistical Service puts the figures of girls given into early marriages and engaging in other hazardous work at 17%, which is very disturbing.

Adding that, this problem is a result of the non-maintenance of children by some parents in the region leading to the increase of child slavery in the Bono region called on all and sundry to assist other agencies to deliver their mandate else the situation will get out of hand.
