Militants attack an African Union (AU) base in Somalia.

Al-Shabab terrorists have attacked an African Union facility in central Somalia, where Burundian soldiers are stationed.

Witnesses told news media that fierce battle erupted at the base, which is about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Mogadishu's capital.

"The terrorists attacked the Burundian army base... there was severe combat and deaths on both sides," local military commander Mohamed Ali told the AFP news agency.

He went on to say, "They opened the attack with a car bomb burst before a fierce exchange of gunfire broke out."

The African Union force, now known as Atmos, is made up of soldiers from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, and Ethiopia, among others.

It supports the Mogadishu government in its fight against al-Shabab militants.
