A small plane crashes into a busy road in Haiti, killing six people.

At least six people were killed when a small plane crashed into a main road in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

When the plane crashed in the Carrefour district, it was on its way from the capital to the south-eastern port town of Jacmel.

Several persons on the ground were hurt.

The pilot was one of those who originally survived but eventually died in hospital from his injuries. Engine failure, according to officials, was to fault.

The plane made a distress signal 20 minutes after takeoff, according to the country's civil aviation authority.

In recent years, the impoverished country has been plagued by a series of natural disasters that have wreaked havoc on its infrastructure and economy.

Gang violence has also increased as a result of the political instability that followed President Jovenel Mose's assassination in July of last year.
