In Malawi's northern Karonga area, a van carrying at least 22 amateur football players and team supporters overturned as it was being driven home from a game.
An embankment on the left side of the road was struck by the van, which was carrying about 80 people, on Saturday night when the driver failed to navigate a bend, according to a police statement.
Lazarus Chakwera, the president of Malawi, extended a message of sympathy to the families of the deceased and directed the department in charge of disaster management issues to provide prompt assistance to all the impacted families.
