US urges DR Congo to protect UN peacekeepers

In light of the country's protests, the US has requested that the Democratic Republic of the Congo's government secure UN forces and their facilities.

Since Monday, 19 people have died as a result of protests against the UN presence in the nation, known as Monusco, including three peacekeepers.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the State Department, told reporters on Thursday, "We call on the national and local authorities in the [DR Congo] to ensure the protection of Monusco properties and workers and for demonstrators to express their emotions peacefully.

The US praised the DR Congo government's "commitment to examining these incidents" and stated that attacks against UN employees and their sites were illegal under international law.

Mr. Price noted that Monusco serves “a critical role in fostering peace and security, protecting civilians, and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance”.
