Luis Enrique says Ramos is not able to compete hence his omission
The Spanish captain will be absent from the Euros scheduled to take place next month.
Luis Enrique announced his 24-man Spain squad for this summer's European Championship, with the big news being the absence of captain Sergio Ramos.
The Real Madrid skipper has only managed to participate in five encounters this calendar year due to his recurring injuries, which is why the Spain coach did not select him.
"He has not been able to compete or train. It has not been easy [to drop him]. Yesterday I called him and it was difficult and harsh," he said at a press conference.
"I feel bad, he is very professional and he helps the national team a lot and he can [help] in the future, but I seek the benefit of the whole group.
"I recommended that he be selfish and that he recovers well, and that he plays for his club and for the national team."
For the first time ever at a major tournament, Spain will not have any Real Madrid player in their squad including Nacho.
