Mr Ruto came up with what you can call an olive branch. He said he's now ready to do negotiations. This is basically a climbdown."

Kenya's leader 'climbdown' paved way for talks - Odinga

According to opposition leader Raila Odinga, Kenyan President William Ruto's decision to change course from a hardline stance amid waves of demonstrations by the opposition opened the door for negotiations.

For the first time since the protests over the high cost of living and alleged electoral irregularities started, President Ruto spoke to the country on Sunday.

One of Mr. Odinga's requests, a bipartisan parliamentary discussion on the creation of the next electoral commission, was one that the president acceded to.

The opposition leader's other demands, such as the expense of living and the legitimacy of his presidency, he made it clear he would not discuss.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr. Odinga praised Mr. Ruto's "climbdown" and insisted that all problems needed to be discussed.
