Kenyans react over deputy president's teary moment

Kenyans' reactions to the emotive scene of William Ruto, the country's deputy president, sobbing during a house prayer gathering are divided.

Mr. Ruto has cried in front of the public twice; the first occasion was in 2013 after he and President Uhuru Kenyatta were elected to their first terms in office.

The two have subsequently split up, and the president is supporting Raila Odinga, a former opposition leader, who is running against his deputy.

On Tuesday, Mr. Ruto had a "breaking down" moment that was covered by much of the local media.

In the video that was posted online, a visibly upset Mr. Ruto hid his face in his hands before wiping away tears.

Some worship music is playing and a preacher is praying in the background. Before the elections on Tuesday, a prayer gathering had been organized for the nation.

Kenyans responded to the tragedy in a variety of ways on Twitter.

Is the Ruto who curses in the streets the one who cries the same person? Posing is Lydia Naira.

"Dr. William Ruto is sobbing, making supplications, and praying for Kenya. God will reward him, tweeted Sammy Masio.

Kenya’s presidential race is tight between Mr. Ruto and Mr. Odinga, according to the latest polls - with none meeting the constitutional requirement of getting more than 50% of the votes required to win.
