Kenya resumes khat exports to Somalia

Following a two-year prohibition due to deteriorating diplomatic relations, the first cargo plane carrying the illegal drug leaf known as khat arrived in Somalia from Kenya.

Tens of millions of dollars are traded annually.

A deal was inked earlier this month by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Somali counterpart, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, that will also see the return of seafood commerce.

The leaf, also known as miraa, was banned by Somalia after the African nation accused Kenya of interfering in its internal affairs and because of a maritime border dispute.

Relations improved after President Mohamud's election victory in May.
