DR Congo to hold funeral for anti-UN protest victims

On Friday, a funeral will be held for protestors who died while participating in an anti-UN demonstration in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It occurs four days after a memorial service for UN employees who tragically lost their lives during the protests.

Last week, protests broke out in the city of Goma as residents accused the UN peacekeeping operation, Monusco, of failing to defeat armed groups.

As organizers urge people to close their shops and observe the day in honor of individuals who recently passed away in this region, flyers with the phrase "Bye-bye Monusco" have been dispersed across Goma.

The majority of people who died were under 30 years old, with an 11-year-old youngster being the youngest.

The protests will go on until Monusco departs this area, according to the leaflets.

The second-largest peacekeeping mission in the world, the UN's deployment in eastern DR Congo has been in operation for more than ten years.

The populace claims that its presence has not brought peace and that they would prefer to solve the nation's issues on their own.

The peacekeeping deployment would be assessed, a Monusco's special representative of the UN secretary-general told the BBC earlier this week.

A prudent and steady transition plan would be established, according to the envoy.
