Jesse Lingard says he respected Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave him out of England’s Euro 2020 squad but was ’emotional’ and ‘down’ when he learned the news earlier this month.

The Manchester United forward enjoyed an outstanding end to the season on loan at West Ham United and was named in England’s preliminary 33-man party for this summer’s tournament though he was omitted from the squad.

According to him, it was the manager's decision and he respects that.

The Red Devil’s star was given playing time in both of England’s warm-up victories over Austria and Romania.

While performing incredibly on the field of play, the 28-year-old United midfielder failed to make the cut when the English coach trimmed his squad down to 26 players.

Lingard reveals that It was indeed a bitter pill for him to swallow but he had no other choice than to respect the decisions of his manager.

‘It was emotional, you’re sad and you’re down, but you’ve got to respect the manager’s decision.

‘Me and Gareth have a great relationship, and now it’s about supporting the boys.’ Lingard told Sky Sports when asked how he reacted to his omission.
