In Zambia, embassies flying LGBT pride flags have caused a stir.

After hoisting the rainbow flag beside their own national flags on their premises on Tuesday, the Swedish and Finnish embassies in Zambia have received opposition in the country.

In Zambia, where British colonial-era restrictions on homosexuality still apply, same-sex partnerships are illegal.

The Swedish embassy in Zambia used the hashtag #Idahot2022, which stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexnd Transphobia, to tweet a rainbow flag.

The tweet stated, "LGBTIQ rights are human rights - always and everywhere."

"Standing together for human rights," the Finnish envoy tweeted.

According to The Lusaka Times website, former Zambian ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba has requested explanations from the country's foreign ministry.

He is cited as saying, "It is astonishing that these embassies choose to fly these flags on their grounds without proper consideration for the legislation and cultural sensitivities of Zambians and Zambia on the topic."

In December 2019, the United States recalled its ambassador to Zambia following a diplomatic spat over his criticism of a gay couple's detention.

The Zambian government accused the ambassador of attempting to impose policy on the country.
