Hundreds of traders who were affected by the evacuation exercise at the Kumasi Central Market by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly have decided to vehemently adopt the railways as their new centre of trade, SoireeNews reports.

The sellers have divulged disappointment in the Ashanti Regional Minister, Honorable Simon Osei Mensah and the KMA Metropolitan Mayor, Honorable Osei Assibey Antwi for their failure to allocate them to a suitable place for business.

Per their complaints, majority of them after the evacuation exercise were not allocated by the Assembly to either the Afia Kobi Market at Abinkyi or Racecourse which has left them stranded for some time now and the approach is affecting their finances.

The railway lines have been left in a 'filthy state' for years now

They also addressed that a section of them who were positioned at the available markets had challenges with the uncompleted grounds and distance hence their decision to take up the railways grounds as their new business location.

Hundreds of traders on Thursday, March 18, 2021, gathered at the Kumasi railways to survey the place and to forcefully start trading at the venue which has been inactive for almost a decade now.

Soireenews observations revealed that some of the traders had started structuring tables to sell on with the others ready to tidy the place for business.

The Ashanti Regional Minister last Saturday cautioned central market traders to evacuate from the grounds for the last time to make way for works to continue.

Rubbish scattered all over at the railways

Sellers at Zone One and Two of the market refused to relocate to the Abinkyi and Racecourse markets, despite the 7 March 2021 deadline that was given them.

They, however, conflicted with Messrs Contracta Construction Ltd, on the project in an attempt to fence the part of the market.

The exercise has been successful yet majority of traders have complained of been ill-treated by the Minister and the KMA Mayor for leaving them abandoned.
