THE President of the Ghana National Association of ADR Practitioners (GNAAP), Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, has called on political leaders to prioritise national development over personal interests.

In a speech delivered at the 11th Annual General Conference of GNAAP, Mr Owusu-Koranteng emphasised the need for politicians to put the nation's interests above their personal ambitions.

"Our country has gone through periods of slavery and foreign domination which negatively affected our concept of political leadership... Let us recognise that leadership is a powerful tool for transforming the dreams and aspirations of the electorate into reality," he said.

The conference theme, "Strengthening Ghana's Democracy through Dialogue and Inclusiveness: The Role of Alternative Dispute Resolution," highlighted the importance of peaceful and inclusive elections for national development.

According to him, it was vital that Ghana strived for a peaceful election in the upcoming 2024 polls.

"If political candidates are desirous to serve the interests of the people they represent, they will not promote electoral violence but would rather use the election campaigns to foster unity among the population to achieve national developmental goals," he stated.

Mr Owusu-Koranteng hammered on the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in promoting national development.

"ADR is a time-tested social cohesion instrument which must be promoted as part of our electoral culture to avoid occurrences of conflicts that have become associated with our electoral process," he said.

He indicated that GNAAP offered free conflict resolution services during and after the elections to prevent electoral violence.

In this regard, he urged citizens to participate in the electoral process and make informed choices to strengthen Ghana's democracy.

"Ghana has enough developmental challenges to occupy political leaders who are desirous to work hard to change the economic development challenges of our country to prosperity... Let us elect political leaders who would enjoy the peace and support of the people for the development of the country," the President of GNAAP stressed.
