After troops were stationed early on Tuesday in Ashaiman, a suburb of Ghana's capital Accra, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, the deputy defense minister of Ghana, apologized for military excesses.

A young soldier was killed nearby, reportedly by unidentified assailants who then led to the deployment.

Social media users have posted images and videos of what they claim to be soldiers abusing civilians during the mission.

In an interview with a local TV station, Mr. Amankwa-Manu said, "If decent, innocent residents of Ashaiman were caught up in these operations, I, in my position as deputy defense minister, I apologise for that.

"It is only right that we acknowledge when there have been excesses in such activities. But we won't apologize for carrying out the missions."

In order to "bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime," according to Mr. Amankwa-Manu, the military high leadership approved the mission.

About 72 people, according to a local MP, were detained during the raid.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have not yet responded to the situation.
