THE PARLIAMENT has taken a significant step in the connection of the reports of the illegal and unlawful increment in the charges of the fees intended to be imposed on the travellers by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) headed by Mrs.Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.

The intended charges were to be imposed on the travelers (clients) by the company without the approval or consent of the House of Parliament.
The development has informed the decision of the second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Andrew Asiamah Amoako on behalf of the house to summon the Managing Director (MD) of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare
 
The summon was issued after the the Member of Tamale South Constituency,
Alhaji Haruna Idrisu has drawn the attention of Parliament to a new fees and charges been implemented by the Ghana Airport Company.
The said payment is to take effect on the 1st of May 2024. In a letter signed by Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, she indicated that the company has instituted maintenance charges of US$20 on all round trips and US$10 to be charged one way trip.
Honourable Haruna Idrisu stated categorically that, it is of urgent public importance therefore the Minister of Transport has to appear before Parliament to explain to Ghanaians where he
 gets his authority from. 
He stressed that it is illegal to charge any fees at the airport without seeking Parliamentary approval.
The minority Leader of Parliament, Dr Casiel Ato Baah Forson adding his voice to the concerns raised by Honourable drisu, he insisted that, the speaker summons the Managing Director of the company  to appear before Parliament as urgent us possible.
He lamented that, such unapproved taxes are gradually making Ghana extremely expensive and high tax regime country because of the conduct of some state own enterprises.
He expressed that travelers have stopped doing transit in Ghana due to high cost of charges at the Airport. He further explained that, hotel businesses are also going down due to low patronage by people who do transit in the country.
The second deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako who presided directed that, the minister of transport appears before the house on the 19th of March to address the issue.
