Gambian civilians charged over coup plot

Two citizens and a police officer have been accused by The Gambia's police prosecutors in relation to the purported coup attempt last month.

The three men were accused of conspiring to commit a crime and concealing treason. They contest the accusations.

They are charged with plotting and concealing information on the attempted coup of President Adama Barrow in October and December 2022 in Banjul, the nation's capital, and other locations.

They were also accused of failing to alert the appropriate authorities after learning of a plot to remove President Barrow from office from the suspected ringleader.

A national security adviser claimed last week that citizens were engaged, with their function being to finance the purportedly unsuccessful coup.

The government claimed in December that it had stopped a coup attempt and had taken some soldiers into custody.

The accusers are appearing in court for the first time. A court martial will be held for the military personnel.
