Six persons have been confirmed dead in a Gory accident on the Odweanoma mountain on Nkwakwa, Kwahu-Atibie stretch of the road in the Eastern Region.

The fatal accident, according to a taxi driver, involving a Hyundai truck with registration number GW 5638_19, killed six onboard including a resident of Nkwakwa, named Ramatu, who died at the spot with her son. Adding that the survival is in a critical condition, receiving treatment at the Atibie Government Hospital.

Narrating the gory accident to Soiree News regional correspondent, William Ofori, he said it occurred on Tuesday afternoon, May 26, 2021, around 2 pm, involving a Hyundai truck with registration number GW 5638_19.

The eyewitness revealed, when they were descending from the Atibie stretch of the road, behind the truck, he realized that the truck was moving faster than expected and suddenly, the vehicle somersaulted several times on the road when the driver attempted to save it from running into a ditch.

According to driver Yaw Ansong, all-male passengers in the truck were pronounced dead at the arrival of Atibie government hospital, except the truck driver, and the deceased include Ramatu, a kenkey seller, her son of about 4 years, both residents of Nkwakwa.

The information revealed, that they attended a funeral over the weekend at Forifori in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern region and met their untimely death, according to a relative.

The eye witness stated that he believed either the vehicle failed a break or the driver was a stranger on the road and might have lost control of the steering due to overspeeding on the sharp curve which resulted in the somersault of the vehicle when descending the mountain from Atibie towards Nkawkaw.

The Ghana National Fire Service from the Kwahu West rescue team arrived on time and managed to tow the vehicle from the middle of the road.

According to Eastern Regional MTTD Police commander, Chief Superintendent Kofi  Ahiatepe, the truck was loaded with canopies, and spinning machines, with 10 people on board; 4 survived in the accident.

He explained this morning via phone that two young boys of 2 years old were also involved in the accident and are now deceased.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Atibie Government Hospital for preservation, yet to be identified.
